A set of six black and white posters,linked to Letters and Sounds and each dedicated to one of the letters: S, A, T, P, I, and N. The posters show pictures related to the initial sounds like ‘S’ for Strawberry and ‘I’ for Ink. Below each letter, a blank space invites children to either jot down words or practice the letter’s formation. Children can colour the posters, adding a personal touch and these can be used as a classroom frieze. The posters can be duplicated for a range of games. Use them for matching, where children pair objects or pictures with the corresponding initial sound. Or children can use the letters to make simple words. Other ideas for using the resource might include: Sound Hunt Adventure: Organize a classroom scavenger hunt where children search for items that start with each poster’s letter. Storytelling Starter Kit: Use the posters as prompts for storytelling or creative writing sessions. For instance, challenge children to create a story that includes words starting with each of the featured letters.

This unit of work is designed for Key Stage 1 and integrates literacy and phonics with maths concepts like sorting, pairing, and categorizing. Each lesson encourages children to recognize, sound out, and spell simple words, with a specific focus, mostly, on CVC words and children’s names -making the learning experience fun and engaging. Lessons include cutting and sorting colour character cards into alphabetical order by name; drawing, writing or pasting characters under their names; finding a name for each letter of the alphabet in the word search; sharing a short story and answering comprehension questions, as well as finding hidden names in lines of letters.
